2025 Preakness Stakes Odds: Sovereignty Sitting Out, Journalism Favored

The 150th Preakness Stakes are set to run Saturday, May 17 at Pimlico Race Course with Journalism entering as the +160 favorite. The race called the "Run for the Black-Eyed Susan" in tribute to Maryland's state flower will go on without Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty, who is not running.

While favorites have historically won 73 of the past 149 races, none have crossed the finish line first since Justify's 2018 victory, which ultimately led to his iconic Triple Crown run.

journalism favored once again, this time at preakness stakes

Journalism gears up for the 150th Preakness Stakes as the +160 favorite, a familiar position as he carried the same odds heading into the Kentucky Derby—where he finished second to Sovereignty. With Sovereignty's trainer opting to rest the colt for his long-term benefit, the Preakness field opens up massively and Journalism finds himself in the spotlight yet again.

That runner-up performance at Churchill Downs just proved Journalism's reputation as a strong contender, showcasing speed and stamina down the stretch of the race. And with Sovereignty sitting out, that removes a major obstacle for Journalism.
